The paintings portray farmers, small- town people from the heartland of America.

Burgess painted the farmers and their rural neighbors near the end of a great

era.  For the first time in the history of America, more people are living in cities

than in the country.  Farmers, much like cowboys last century and the Indians

two centuries ago, are fast disappearing.
